Used Equipment Sales Volume Leaps in First Quarter, EquipmentWatch Index Reports

During the past month, nationwide used equipment prices increased 0.1 percent while volumes jumped 9.8 percent on an active market, according to the latest EquipmentWatch Index.

During the past month, nationwide used equipment prices increased 0.1 percent while volumes jumped 9.8 percent on an active market, according to the latest EquipmentWatch Index. Prices rose substantially in the western U.S. in April, 4.8 percent compared to March.

Volumes increased dramatically across the board, led by the Southwest, which increased 16.5 percent compared to March.

The index offers price and volume information on a state-by-state basis.

A report on heavy equipment auction market trends is also available. Covering 17 auctioneers, $1.74 trillion worth of equipment transactions occurred in the first quarter, covering more than 47,000 transactions. The top five heavy equipment types by volume include crawler-mounted hydraulic excavators, 4-wheel-drive articulated wheel loaders, skid-steer loaders, tractor-loader-backhoes, and standard crawler dozers.

The top five manufacturers by volume of equipment sold at auctions were Caterpillar, Deere, JLG, Bobcat and Volvo.

In the resale market area, resale asking prices dropped in January but rebounded 16 percent by the end of March. The top five equipment types by volume were crawler-mounted hydraulic excavators, electric self-propelled scissorlifts, 4-wheel drive articulated wheel loaders, telescoping boom rough-terrain lift trucks, and skid-steer loaders.
