Makita U.S.A., manufacturer of industrial power tools and accessories, last week announced that all three of its Lithium-ion battery chargers are qualified Energy Star products.

Makita’s Optimum charger (DC18SC), Rapid Optimum charger (DC18RA), and 7.2 Lithium-ion charger (DC075A) were the first in the power tool category to qualify for the list of Energy Star-qualified battery charging systems in 2006, per the strict energy-efficient guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Energy Star is a joint program of the EPA and DOE designed to help consumers and businesses save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Energy Star recognizes a range of products for being energy efficient and environmentally friendly, including commercial food service equipment, home and building envelope products, HVAC products, and home electronics and appliances, which include battery chargers for power tools.

According to Energy Star, more energy-efficient battery chargers have the potential to save Americans more than 1 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy per year, saving Americans more than $100 million annually while preventing the release of more than one million tons of greenhouse gas emissions — equivalent to the emissions of 150,000 cars.
