Atlas Copco’s Energy Storage Systems Optimize High-Power Applications

Aug. 23, 2022
The versatile energy storage system can be used together with a generator to enable smart load management. It can serve as the primary source of power when used in the island mode.

Atlas Copco Power Technique has introduced ZBC, the latest model in its lithium-ion energy storage system range, called ZenergiZe. It can be used as a standalone source, combined with generators to make a hybrid power solution or renewable sources of energy as well as to create Microgrids. The new ZenergiZe is the solution for applications that require a constant and significant flow of electrical energy, the company said.

The ZenergiZe ZBC range offers rated power from 100kVA to 1000kVA and an energy storage capacity of 250kWh to 2000kWh each, depending on the model, to deliver high power with long autonomy. The versatile energy storage system can be used together with a generator to enable smart load management. It can serve as the primary source of power when used in the island mode.

It can be combined with renewable sources of energy for immediate or later use. It captures the energy from solar panels, for example, and stores it for delivery at any given time. The intelligent control system manages the energy offer and demand coming from the different energy sources, increasing the efficiency of hybrid solutions that is translated into a cost reduction of the total solution.

“Energy consumption is changing quickly, and the market demands cleaner power sources,” said Bárbara Gregorio, product marketing manager – innovative energies and digital solutions at Atlas Copco’s Power and Flow Division.  “Atlas Copco’s ZenergiZe is an energy solution that can help customers minimize environmental impact while benefiting from a low cost of ownership. Our energy storage system range delivers zero CO2 emissions, zero noise, and has virtually zero maintenance, supplying energy without compromise.”

ZBC can also act as the ‘brain’ of a microgrid, managing the power supply of entire areas such as small towns, university campuses, and neighborhoods, the company said. It can store the energy from diverse sources and manage the energy consumption and regulate the load for each of the applications associated with the microgrid using its intelligent control system. The ZenergiZe energy storage systems can be synchronized with additional energy storage systems, enabling users to scale their final solution with up to 30 ZBCs working in parallel in any power node. That means a storage capacity from 7.5MWh up to 60MWh of energy.

With a footprint of just 10 feet or 20 feet, depending on the model, the ZenergiZe range is designed for applications where floor space is limited. The use of high-density lithium-ion batteries means that they are 70 percent smaller and lighter in weight than other battery technologies, the company said. Thanks to its compact design, it is very versatile and can be used in rental or construction applications where transport is a must, as well as in more stationary applications where space and weight may be a constraint.

Atlas Copco’s energy storage systems are also a way to meet operating and safety restrictions in noise-sensitive environments such as events and metropolitan construction sites or to power remote applications. For example, in a hybrid system, a rental company can save up to 80% in fuel by using Atlas Copco’s ZBC and a small generator. While, in an island mode, it provides zero CO2 emissions, zero NOx pollution, and zero noise, the company said.

Atlas Copco’s ZenergiZe range is easy to use, scale, and install thanks to its plug-and-play design, the company said.
