A disgruntled employee quit his job Thursday, only to return with a gun and open fire on former co-workers.

Joseph Lawrence, 59, is accused of shooting two people and pointing his gun at a worker at United Rentals Highway Technologies in Tempe, Ariz.

"He was very specific on who his targets were," said Tempe Police Sgt. Dan Masters.

Lawrence, who operated machinery, was either angry about being denied a vacation or having his work hours slashed. Police said he quit his job at 6:20 a.m., but returned at 2 p.m., packing a small-caliber pistol.

First he shot James Gilbert, 38, who was leaning against a counter, police said. Then he pointed the gun at the head of another co-worker, before moving on. Lawrence then entered the office of Troy VanderVorst, who was sitting behind a desk, shooting the man in the arm, police said.

Police said when they arrested Lawrence a few blocks away, he was carrying a pistol.

Both victims were transported to Maricopa Medical Center, but are expected to survive. Gilbert, who was shot in the abdomen, underwent surgery and still has a bullet lodged in his pelvis.

Lawrence was booked on two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault. Lawrence, who has worked at the Tempe company since July 2000, was cited for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit in 1991.
