Manitowoc Cranes will idle its Manitowoc, Wis., manufacturing plant this week and lay off about 90 factory workers for at least a month in a cost-cutting move caused by slow sales, company officials said.

Based on our workload, we anticipate that a number of those people will be called back in late September or early October,” said Thomas Musial, Manitowoc’s senior vice president of human resources. The crane manufacturer employs about 580 people in Manitowoc, including about 440 hourly production workers.

The crane business accounts for about two-thirds of Manitowoc’s business, which includes Grove Worldwide, which it acquired last month and Potain, which it purchased last year.
