Caterpillar last week announced plans to close its transmission remanufacturing plant in Summerville, S.C., which employs 280 workers. Noting that it was not a viable long-term operation, Caterpillar said it will ramp down production and close the facility in mid-2014.
Heavy-duty transmissions and components are torn down, recycled and rebuilt at the 200,000-square-foot plant, which has experienced a decline in orders over the past few years.
