Carson, Calif.-based Multiquip and Folsom-Calif.-based Altergy provided environmentally clean lighting to the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards Jan. 16.
Powered by an Altergy zero emissions Freedom Power fuel cell system, the lighting was delivered by Multiquip’s self-contained Earthsmart portable light tower. Altergy’s hydrogen-powered fuel cells are designed to provide clean and quiet “off the grid” electricity while Multiquip’s high-efficiency plasma lighting system is engineered to illuminate an area approximately the size of a football field.
“We’re excited to have our Earthsmart system being used at such a high-profile event,” said Torsten Erbel, vice president product management, engineering and customer support for Multiquip. “It’s a great fit for this type of application where there’s a premium on clean quiet operation, safety and high efficiency.”
The Earthsmart system was used for the first time ever at the March 2010 Academy Awards ceremony. The eco-friendly system now is scheduled for use at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild and GRAMMY awards, and will again be in operation at the 83rd Academy Awards program, as well as at upcoming NASA Space Shuttle launches.
“This application demonstrates the versatility and range of usages for our Freedom Power fuel-cell systems,” said Eric Metter, Altergy’s president and CEO. “We’ve established a strong base in telecommunications in recent years and the adoption of our clean power systems by the Golden Globe Awards and Oscars shows our ability to provide new and exciting eco-friendly solutions to today’s numerous growing power demands.”
