Summer is history, and it's time for many to store that lawn and garden equipment. But before you lock it away for winter, the Outdoor Power and Equipment Institute recommends the following procedures so it will perform at peak efficiency next spring:

n Fill the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer or additive for extended storage.

n Disconnect spark plug wire/s, and for walk-behinds, remove the spark plug. Put a small amount of oil into the cylinder, turn over the engine with the pull start a few times and then reinstall the spark plug.

n Clean all dirt, grass and debris from the engine, cutting deck and mower (for walk-behinds).

n Remove the battery and fully charge it before storage.

n Store equipment and fuel in a dry, ventilated area and never near a pilot light, stove or other heat source.

n Users of battery-operated mowers should follow manufacturer instructions for battery charging in winter storage.
