Without proper snow blower maintenance, users might spend more time outside in freezing temperatures clearing snow than inside in front of the fireplace.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute offers helpful hints to ensure that operators spend more time inside than out:

* Check all bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness.

* Prevent freezing of auger/impeller by running machine for a few minutes after use.

* Check belts for wear and tightness.

* Fill fuel tank after each operation to force moist air from tank and to reduce condensation of water into fuel.

* Keep tires properly inflated and add tire chains to increase traction.

* Never put hands in chute. Always use a stick.

As always, the OPEI recommends that the user read the maintenance instructions in the owner's manual before using a snow blower.
