Toromont Cat, Canadian Caterpillar dealer, will close its Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, branch effective May 2, the company said. Toromont Cat made the decision following a strategic review of branch distribution in Newfoundland, and the quest to provide a cost effective and improved customer-service model.

The branch has existed since 1997 as Toromont Cat and previously under Newfoundland Tractor.

Field service technicians and the current sales force will continue to service the needs of Grand Falls customers, with parts being handled through the nearby Corner Brook, Newfoundland, operation.

“Unfortunately, today’s economic conditions have been challenging, specifically in this area,” said Wayne Waterman, vice president and general manager Newfoundland. “All the while, we have strived to become more competitive and provide value to our customers. It is for these reasons we have chosen to consolidate our branch operation in Grand Falls with our Corner Brook operation. By doing so, we hope to achieve some economies of scale while continuing to service our existing Grand Falls customers. We will attempt to maintain employment for as many employees as possible, including transfers to other operations where feasible.

Toromont Cat is the parent company of Battlefield Equipment, a major rental player. The company covers Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba and Nunavut.
