Tsurumi Boosts Wastewater Equipment with New Explosion-Proof Offerings

Oct. 16, 2024
Tsurumi’s new AVANT MQ, MY pumps and MMR mixers provide users with extensive customization options.

Tsurumi Pump is expanding its wastewater process product range with new FM-approved submersible pumps and mixers designed for hazardous environments with explosion risks, such as municipal plants, chemical facilities and industrial wastewater applications. These products feature high-efficiency IE3 motors, thermal sensors and various impeller and propeller options to enhance performance and reliability.

Renowned for offering solutions across every stage of the process and applications of various sizes, Tsurumi continues to update its product lineup in response to user feedback and evolving needs.

“Our FM-approved explosion-proof line consists of expertly engineered products designed to meet a wide range of project bid specifications,” said Chris Bristol, Tsurumi’s municipal product sales manager. “They deliver exceptional customization options and ensure top performance across various wastewater applications.”

Pre-treatment and mixing

The wastewater process journey typically begins at lift stations, where powerful pumps such as the versatile Avant MQ or the titanium-built VANCS TM series move wastewater to a higher point, allowing it to flow by gravity or be pumped under pressure directly to treatment plants.

Once at the facility, Tsurumi’s KE/KS and KW/KM series bar screens form an effective barrier against detritus, from sanitary wipes to plastic bottles and finer materials. Various bar spacing options are available to handle different levels of solid content, further reducing the risk of damage to downstream pumps and valves.

“Our bar screens provide excellent performance even in the harshest conditions,” Bristol said. “They rely on stainless steel for corrosion resistance, automated cleaning mechanisms to remove debris, and can handle high volumes of water without compromising a plant’s flow rate.”

Denitrification is the next key stage in wastewater treatment, where submersible mixers take center stage. Tsurumi’s mixers, including the new FM-approved MMR Series, are designed to create strong, consistent currents. Optimized propeller designs ensure efficient flow patterns and well-mixed water.

Aeration and solids removal

Aeration supplies oxygen to bacteria for treating and stabilizing wastewater, a critical process for breaking down organic matter. Aerators and ejectors are used for oxygenation and mixing in basins, enabling aerobic bacteria to decompose organic material. Tsurumi’s TRN Series aerators ensure the wastewater remains properly mixed, promoting an even distribution of bacteria.

Ejectors create suction to pull air into the flow, mix it with water and then eject it. Tsurumi’s BER Series delivers the highest levels of mixing and oxygen transfer, and it is built with high-quality materials like cast iron or stainless steel. Designed to resist corrosion and wear, it offers reliability and ease of maintenance, reducing both downtime and maintenance costs.

Once wastewater reaches the clarification stage, the focus turns to sludge removal. The first step is removing floating debris from the water’s surface, which is where Tsurumi’s FSP Series floating scum skimmer comes in. This system includes a submersible pump, a jet-injector mechanism and three floats. It relies on the Venturi principle to remove floating oils and grease solids with minimal water. A bypass attached to the discharge opening recycles part of the pumped water back to the intake, creating a jet flow that ensures consistent, stable suction power in the collection cup or intake.

The floats allow the submersion depth to be adjusted to as little as a single millimeter, maintaining this distance regardless of changes in water level. However, a simple twist of the floats can quickly increase flow by setting the suction mouth deeper (up to 60 mm), allowing the scum to be pumped to the concentration tank for processing.

“Our process equipment is so flexible that it can be used across several industries, whether it’s wastewater, chemical processing or food-processing applications,” Bristol said. “A key feature is how well this equipment works in conjunction with our pumps, ensuring highly efficient operations and allowing Tsurumi to be a one-stop shop for all pump needs.”
