2024: The Year in Review, Part 3

From August through December, the rental industry continues to grow, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Still plenty of news, acquisitions and some unexpected surprises!

August

·       H&E Rentals opens a branch in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, its first general rental location in the state of Iowa. Two days later it opened another in Springfield, Mo., its fourth general rental location in Missouri.

·       Terex’s Aerial Work Platforms division, otherwise known as Genie, posts a 6.9-percent year-over-year lift in net sales in the second quarter, an increase driven primarily by healthy demand for mobile elevating work platforms and telehandlers in North America.

·       LGH and its U.K. sister company Rotrex join forces to open a new warehouse in Erith, South East London.

·       Synergy Equipment, a Florida-based equipment rental company and Opifex Enterprises, a Texas rental company combine to form one of the largest independent equipment rental business in the U.S.

·       Cummins announces the company has been awarded $75 million by the Department of Energy to convert approximately 360,000 square feet of existing manufacturing space at its Columbus, Ind., engine plant for zero-emissions components and electric powertrain systems. Cummins says it will match the grant and invest $75 million for a total of $150 million to expand production of battery packs, powertrain systems and other battery-electric vehicle components for Accelera by Cummins, the company’s zero-emissions business segment.

·       H&E Rentals adds another, a branch in Amarillo, Texas, its 30th in Texas, and then another in Lufkin, Texas, and another in Frederick, Md., its third in Maryland.

·       Hitachi Global Air Power U.S. acquires Longview, Texas-based Sullair distributor Air Power Sales & Service, which specializes in 24-hour sales and service of air compressors, air treatment products, accessories and related equipment, a Sullair distributor for more than 35 years.

·       ARA, in its latest forecast, projects a softening trend, but still an 8.9 percent revenue increase in 2024 totaling $78.7 billion in U.S. construction and general tool rental revenue, and 5.3-percent growth in 2025.

·       Hollywood, Fla.-based Durante Equipment debuts on the Inc. 5000 at No. 1,338, with a three-year growth rate of 386 percent, generating 27 new jobs in South Florida.

·       Hills Machinery opens a full-service facility in Chesapeake, Va., its 13th location and third in Virginia.

·       Barnhart Crane & Rigging acquires Mountain States Crane, Albuquerque, N.M., its fifth acquisition this year, first in New Mexico.

·       United Rentals expands Australian footprint with acquisition of Shore Hire.

·       ANA Inc., supplier of generators, air compressors, and energy solutions, makes the  latest Inc. 5000 list for the third year in a row, at No. 944.

·       Point of Rental Software names its first chief financial officer, Matthew Rose.

 

September

·       GSA Equipment, a Barberton, Ohio, provider of lawn and landscape equipment, sales and service, launches new rental department, offering primarily lawn-and-garden and landscaping equipment for daily and weekly rates.

·       Stephenson Equipment, which offers construction equipment, public works equipment and cranes in Pennsylvania and Upstate New York, acquires Valley Supply & Equipment in Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia.

·       Toronto-based Toromont Industries, one of the world’s largest Caterpillar dealers and a major rental player, acquires Tri-City Equipment Rentals, based in Guelph, Ontario, big in heavy equipment rentals, with operations across Southwestern Ontario.

·       All Access Equipment, dealer of CMC tracked aerial lifts, rebrands as CMC North America, following the acquisition of All Access by CMC earlier in the year.

·       HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, Develon and Wallenius Wilhelmsen open North American Customization Center in Brunswick, Ga.

·       Crane manufacturer Tadano Corp., which already owned 14.5 percent of Manitex, reaches agreement to acquire all remaining shares.

·       Canada’s Stephenson’s Rental Services announces that chief operating officer Rob Wilson has been named president and CEO, and that current president and CEO Guy Manuel will assume the role of executive chairman of the board of directors, With both appointments to take effect October 1, 2024.

·       After more than 100 years of operation, Kohler Energy officially rebrands itself as Rehlko, utilizing the same six letters that comprise the Kohler name.

·       H&E Rentals continues its Texas expansion with a new branch in Victoria, Texas, its 32nd in the Lone Star state.

·       MyCrane, the global platform for online crane rental, celebrates a major milestone as recent supplier registrations push the platform’s inventory of lifting equipment to more than 10,000 machines.

·       Registration opens for the 2025 ARA show, which will return to Las Vegas with a mid-week schedule and Future of Equipment Rental education program.

·       A to Z Equipment Rentals, Wilmington, N.C., acquires Country Aire Rentals, Morehead City, N.C.

·       Atlas Copco announces a series of acquisitions: Perslucht Wilda B.V., an air compressor distributor based in Woudenberg, Netherlands; Integrated Pump Rental, a specialty rental provider of dewatering solutions in Johannesburg, South Africa; Generator Rental Services, a specialty power rental solutions company headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand.

·       Netherlands-based Riwal, part of the Boels Group, offers customers up-to-the-minute notification alerts at every step of the machine rental process, giving customers control and reassurance.

·       Hills Machinery launches Hills Uptime Operations, a new division that facilitates lifecycle fleet management and real-time equipment monitoring and service, both for customers’ fleets as well as Hills’ own rental fleet, offering the service in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.

·       Equipment rental revenue in the third quarter of 2024 grew 1.9 percent, according to the quarterly Baird/RER  Equipment Rental Industry survey, the slowest growth post-pandemic and down from a 4.6-percent year-over-year growth rate in the second quarter.

 

October

·       H&E Rentals adds South Dallas branch, its 11th new Texas location in a bit more than two years.

·       Vp plc, one of the United Kingdom’s largest equipment hire (rental) companies acquires Ireland’s Charleville Plant Hire.

·       The Canadian Rental Association names Melanie Misener its new executive director.

·       Northside Tool Rentals, an equipment rental company in the Atlanta area with four branches and more than 70 years in operation, names industry veteran Josh Nickell its new CEO.

·       Terex Corp. acquires Environmental Solutions Group from Dover Corp., making the manufacturer a major player in the waste management industry.

·       ML Crane Group, Crane Services Inc. and Winslow Crane Service consolidate into a single entity called Crane Service Inc., enabling access to an expanded rental fleet, comprehensive support services and streamlined processes with estimating, scheduling and billing.

·       H&E Rentals opens Kansas City South branch, its fourth in Missouri.

·       United Rentals reports equipment rental revenues of $3.463 billion in the third quarter of 2024, up from $3.224 billion in the third quarter of 2023, a 7.4-percent increase. Total revenues for the third quarter of 2024 fall just short of $4 billion at $3.992 billion, a 6-percent year-over-year increase.

·       Herc Rentals’ equipment rental revenue jumps 13.2 percent in third quarter of 2024, while total revenue increases 6.3 percent.

·       Sunbelt Rentals awarded the 2024 Supported Scaffold Project of the Year Award by the Scaffold and Access Industry Association for its work on the Freedom Tower Access Project, where the company was tasked with providing full access for the exterior restoration of the nearly 100-year-old Freedom Tower in Miami. The landmark required a complex and multi-faceted scaffold design.

·       Stellar Industries, a 100-percent employee-owned and -operated manufacturer of high-quality mechanic and service trucks, cranes, tire service trucks, hooklifts, trailers and service truck and van accessories, acquires Elliott Machine Works, a family-owned manufacturing company. 

 

November

·       John Deere announces a new strategic partnership with Trimble to expand jobsite capabilities for its customers. The Trimble Earthworks Grade Control technology will be integrated with the John Deere SmartGrade platform, giving customers access to the Trimble technology ecosystem.

·       Power generation revenues increase 24 percent in third quarter for Cummins, driven by increased global demand, particularly for the data center market.

·       Motion Industries, distributor of maintenance, repair and operation replacement parts and provider of industrial technology solutions, acquires the operating assets of Stoney Creek Hydraulics, based in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada.

·       JLG Industries Inc. names Rogerio dos Santos vice president EMEAI (Europe Middle East Africa & India) Region and director of global strategy / mergers and acquisitions for access equipment.

·       Point of Rental Software announces a new integration between Syrinx and AccountsIQ, providing rental companies with a cloud-based financial management solution.

·       Magni Telescopic Handlers, a world leader in rotating, fixed boom, and heavy lift telehandlers, announces its new collaboration with Carolina Cat, a leading equipment supplier with nine locations across North Carolina.

·       Go Mini’s, a storage rental specialist, deployed more than 150 portable storage containers to areas in North Carolina and Georgia hit hard by Hurricane Milton, giving residents a secure place to store valuables during home repairs and renovations.

·       Caterpillar announces that its exhibit at CES 2025, “The Next 100 Years: Experience What’s Possible,” will feature a powerful combination of technologies and expertise designed to highlight some of the ways Caterpillar is evolving with customers through the energy transition.

 

December

·       Palfinger, a manufacturer of cranes, hooklifts, cable hoists, forklifts, liftgates, service bodies, bucket trucks and more, has started a bucket truck rental program in the United States in partnership with AP Fleet Management. 

·       In the fiscal second quarter, Sunbelt Rentals – including Sunbelt U.S., Sunbelt Canada and Sunbelt U.K. – posted a 5.4-percent rental revenue increase, the company says. Total revenue increased 2.2 percent, a slower rate than during the post-pandemic period.

·       LGP Equipment Rentals, Bell Gardens, Calif., acquires F&B Rentals, a three-location independent rental company in Orange County, Calif.

·       The board of directors of Ashtead Group, parent company of Sunbelt Rentals, based in London and listed on the London Stock Exchange, concludes that the company would be better off moving to a primary listing in the United States. While the company would retain a U.K. listing in the International Companies segment, a move to the U.S. market would be in the best interests of the business and its stakeholders, the board says.

·       Volvo Construction Equipment announces three additional facilities achieving landfill-free status. Ongoing efforts mean there is also less than 1 percent landfill waste across all its other sites. 

·       CES Power LLC, a leading global provider of infrastructure for live events, acquires Base Craft LLC, a provider of high-quality specialty services and equipment for the motion picture industry. Concurrent with the acquisition, CES announces the launch of CES Studio Services, a new division dedicated to providing bundled solutions for film, television and the broadcast industry. 

·       United Rentals Inc., the world’s largest equipment rental company, launches its Excavation Safety Training for Competent Persons Program, offering an interactive approach to teaching trench and excavation safety.
