RER has released its 2007 RER 100 with the total rental volume of the listed companies topping $13 billion at $13,282.5 million, a 14.5-percent increase compared with last year’s RER 100 list, which totaled $11,599.4 million in rental volume.

RER has released its 2007 RER 100 with the total rental volume of the listed companies topping $13 billion at $13,282.5 million, a 14.5-percent increase compared with last year’s RER 100 list, which totaled $11,599.4 million in rental volume.

The top 10 listed companies fell slightly short of $9 billion, at $8,961 million, which rounds off to $9 billion. This figure is a 13.4-percent increase compared with last year’s listing, which totaled $7,903.7 million in 2005 rental volume for the top 10.

A record 14 listed companies topped $200 million in rental revenue, with 21 firms topping $100 million. A record 30 companies topped $50 million in rental volume, and 65 companies topped $25 million in rental volume.

United Rentals topped the list — as it has every year since 1999 — with $2.53 billion in rental volume, which represents volume from continuing operations and does not include revenue from its now-divested traffic safety division.

The race for the No. 2 slot was close and could be measured in several different ways. RER lists Sunbelt Rentals, which included pro forma rental volume for NationsRent, which it acquired last summer — that is, NationsRent’s rental volume for the entire year 2006 was included as part of Sunbelt. Sunbelt was listed with $1,536.0 million in rental volume.

RSC Equipment Rental dropped to No. 3 with $1,368.7 million.

Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. is listed at No. 4 with an RER-estimated $1,345.0 million in rental volume. However, RER estimates the total volume of HERC’s North American rental division at $1,795.0 million, which tops both Sunbelt Rentals and RSC. Furthermore, HERC achieved its volume with fewer than 275 rental branches, nearly 200 fewer than Sunbelt or RSC.

Most important, the top four all posted strong profit margins in 2006.

Home Depot Rentals again claimed the No. 5 slot with an estimated $615 million in rental revenue. NES Rental, Maxim Crane Rental Corp., Neff Rental, H&E Equipment Services and Sunstate Equipment Co. finished out the top 10, with Ahern Rentals close behind at No. 11. Aggreko plc is listed No. 12, which doesn’t include the revenue from its recent acquisition G.E. Energy Rentals. With the addition of G.E.’s revenue, Aggreko would be in the top 10.

The new RER 100 is currently being printed and will soon be mailed to RER subscribers. The complete RER 100 will soon be available at RER’s website, www.rermag.com.
