Caterpillar Inc. continued its downsizing last week by announcing plans to lay off more than 2,200 workers, adding to the more than 22,000 worldwide job cuts previously announced.

The majority of the newly planned layoffs will come from the work force in the company’s home state of Illinois, with 861 production workers coming from the company’s East Peoria track-type tractor facility, additional factory workers in Aurora, Ill., as well as management and support personnel. The company is also laying off 405 workers from its Lafayette, Ind., diesel engine plant.

Caterpillar said the layoffs are not immediate but some will take place in May and June, subject to possible recall when the economy improves.
