George Evans Corp.

The Pow-R-Spade trencher is designed for small trenching jobs such as LP gas line installation, seasonal water lines, downspout runoff and decorative lighting applications. Digging teeth are available for either 3-inch or 4-inch wide trenches and depth is fully adjustable up to 24 inches.

Butch Trevor, owner of Moline, Ill.-based Trevor Tru Value Hardware, says that the typical application for the Pow-R-Spade trencher is for running electrical wires underground. “Every customer that rents it has raved about it,” Trevor says. “It's relatively lightweight and it can even be wheeled into the back of a pickup truck for easy transportation.”

Bobcat

The LT112 Bobcat trencher attachment is designed for trenching projects between 2- and 3-feet deep. This model is approved for the new Bobcat MT52 mini track loader — a popular rental machine — and the 463 skid-steer loader, which are designed for accessing backyards and hard-to-reach areas. With a 24-inch dig depth the LT112 trencher is a suitable model for light-to-medium trenching projects. A manual side-shift comes standard with this trencher.

Dave Steele, manager of Aurora Rentals in Stanwood, Wash., likes the LT112 because it matches up with Bobcat's walk-behind loader. Customers rent it to install water and power lines, he says. “It's about the only thing that works well on rocky ground, which we have a lot of around here,” Steele says.

Barreto

The all-hydraulic, walk-behind 4-wheel-drive trencher is designed to provide better traction and stability on unstable terrain. By reducing side-to-side movement and eliminating front-end bounce, get straighter trenches and a constant trench depth, the company says. With the patented Snaploc system, one snap transforms the 4-wheel-drive back into 2-wheel-drive.

Paul Nottingham, president of Action Rental and Sales in Kingport, Tenn., says, “Since I bought Barreto 4-wheel-drive trenchers, walk-behind trenchers are now one of my top revenue producers. My customers say the Barreto units are much smoother with less vibration, and that trenching with the Barreto is much less of a fight.”
