MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Joseph Mazzotta, owner of Mazzotta Brothers Rentals in Middletown, was shot and killed April 12 at his rental center. He was found dead slumped in a chair at his desk, killed by two gunshot wounds to the head and neck, according to the state medical examiner. No weapon was found at the scene.

Mazzotta was supposed to meet friends earlier in the day, and when he didn't show, they went to his office where they found him dead. Mazzotta had appointments scheduled for that day. It was a Saturday and the business was closed. Police said there were no signs of a forced entry or struggle and the front doors were locked, leading police to believe Mazzotta knew his killer or killers. Police had no immediate leads. Police said preliminary interviews indicated Mazzotta was well liked, active in community affairs, with no known enemies. He was due to be married in about a month.

Rental people who have dealt with Mazzotta told RER he was a hard-working businessman who they enjoyed dealing with.

Mazzotta, 40, is survived by his parents, Salvatore and Vera Mazzotta.
