A Different War

BACK IN 1976, AS I BEGAN MY CAREER in the equipment rental industry, I met a man who would become a lifelong friend and brother. His name is Jose Albert Perez, and many know him from his Hertz days or as the co-founder of Neff Rental. Those who know Jose are aware of his 10-year battle with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

While we have been fighting the rental and manufacturing wars, Jose has been fighting for his life. While we have been complaining about declining rates, Jose has been fighting for the lives of future ALS patients. Jose's desire to seek a cure for this progressive, ultimately fatal disease compelled him to establish the ALS Research Foundation, which funds development of new treatments and advanced clinical research at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

I am asking the industry to support one of our own by contributing to the ALS Research Foundation, or to join Jose at the fifth annual Miami ALS Golf Classic, March 24, at the Doral Resort.

Leading Ladies, cont.

I JUST PULLED THE “LEADING LADIES” article off [www.rermag.com]. My background is in the material-handling industry, so I can relate to many of these stories.

In my 15 years in this business, I have had the opportunity to be the “first woman” in several situations. I was the first female service manager for our construction division and the first female salesperson in our material-handling division. I feel very fortunate to work for a company that sees people for their potential and product knowledge, not for what sex they are.

I have been the rental manager for our northern Kentucky division for almost six years now and have seen our short-term rental fleet and sales numbers grow into the largest fleet within our organization.

Thanks for recognizing a few of the special ladies in our industry. I don't think you will have trouble finding others if you decide to do another article in the future.
