Citing electrical shortages in California and other Western states, Caterpillar said it expects to boost production of power generation equipment by 30 percent this year.

The company has already seen sales of that equipment grow at an annual compound rate of more than 20 percent over the past five years. Cat added it expects to increase sales in its electrical power division to $3.3 billion in 2001 from $2.5 billion.

The Peoria, Ill.-based company posted revenues of $20.2 billion in 2000.
