International Powered Access Federation estimates the worldwide rental fleet for aerial work platforms, also known as mobile elevating work platforms, is around 950,000 units. IPAF last week released its 2013 U.S. and European Powered Access Rental Market Reports.

The United States AWP rental market experienced robust growth in 2012 of 6 percent to reach approximately $6.6 billion, according to the IPAF U.S. Powered Access Rental Market Report 2013. While rental companies kept fleet sizes steady in 2011, 2012 saw a return to fleet expansion. Fleet size and investments are expected to increase in 2013.

The Brazilian AWP rental fleet is estimated between 19,000 to 19,500 units at the end of 2012, a growth of 30 percent over 2011.

The European MEWP rental market in the 10 countries surveyed was flat in 2012, but is expected to grow 3 percent in 2013.

The European MEWP rental market in the 10 countries surveyed remained stable in 2012 and is estimated at approximately €2.3 billion (about U.S. $3.0 billion), according to the IPAF European Powered Access Rental Market Report 2013. The 10 European countries surveyed were Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The European rental market shows mixed results and is marked by three groups: those who struggled in 2012 (Spain, Italy and the Netherlands), those who slightly increased rental revenues (Denmark, U.K., France and Sweden), and those who experienced significant growth (Germany, Finland and Norway).

The reports are presented in an easy-to-read format, highlighting key facts and figures for senior management, such as fleet size, utilization rate and retention period. The IPAF U.S. and European Powered Access Rental Market Reports 2013 are available in English and can be purchased at www.ipaf.org/reports.
