United Steelworks Ratifies Deal with Caterpillar at Milwaukee Factory

June 12, 2013

United Steelworkers Local 1434 has ratified a six-year labor contract at Caterpillar Inc.’s South Milwaukee plant, AP has reported. The new contract freezes wages and pensions, but includes a $4,000 signing bonus and shortens temporary layoffs.

The union, which represents more than 800 employees at the mining equipment plant, turned down a similar proposal in late April. A vote tally was not immediately available.

The union has represented employees at the plant for decades, AP said, but this is its first contract since Caterpillar acquired the factory as part of its purchase of the former Bucyrus International business in 2010.
