The Edison Awards voted Perkins SmartCap a Gold Winner for innovation at an April 11th event at The Capitale in New York. The awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison, whose inventions, new product development methods and achievements including the electric light, literally changed the world.

“This is truly a great honor,” said David Nicoll, Perkins marketing director. “I accept this award on behalf of the great Perkins team, with over 85 years’ heritage and our commitment to constantly press forward with innovative breakthroughs that customers come to expect from Perkins.”

The Perkins SmartCap can be used on new and existing Perkins mechanical and electronic engines. Installed simply by replacing the existing oil filter cap, the solution allows end users to connect their mobile device to their engine via the free Perkins My Engine App on their smartphone. The cap monitors the Perkins engine and sends data directly to the app.

“We are watching the popularity of this product grow with each passing day as we meet the needs of our global customers,” said Michael Wright, Perkins general manager-aftermarket. “There is no device like it, the world’s first low-cost engine-specific connectivity device. This a breakthrough step forward in aftermarket for us and we are very proud of the team that made this possible and of this award.”

When combined, the Perkins SmartCap and Perkins My Engine App will give Perkins customers valuable engine information including:

  • Engine running hours
  • Engine location
  • Service reminders and service log
  • Parts book and consummables information

The cap also provides access to engine-specific information such as build list, series, type, model the Perkins Platinum indicator and the operation and maintenance manual. The app, currently available in English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese, will be available in additional langues this year.

The ballot of nominees for the Edison Awards was judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading business executives including past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medicine.

“Our judges recognized the Perkins SmartCap as a true innovator out of the many products in its category,” said Frank Bonafilia, executive director of the Edison Awards.
