Briggs International last week acquired Maquinaria Ligera Equinter S.A., one of Mexico’s largest rental companies. The acquisition doubles Briggs’ already substantial presence in Mexico. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Equinter handles Bobcat, Stanley, Hyster, Pettibone and a number of other lines of material-handling and construction equipment and mobile rail car movers. It is based in Mexico City, and has seven other branches in Mexico.

Briggs Equipment already has 285 employees at its four Mexican locations and will hire about 300 from Equinter, the company said. Briggs recently told RER it grossed nearly $29 million in rental volume in Mexico in 2009, in addition to $67 million in the U.K. and $52 million in the United States. Having recently exited its Case dealership business in the United States, Briggs appears to be increasingly committed to rental and international business.

Briggs Equipment is based in Dallas and is No. 22 on the new RER 100.
