Engineering News-Record Announces Top 200 Environmental Firms

Engineering News-Record, published by McGraw-Hill Construction, last week released its list of the 2009 Top 200 Environmental Firms and provided analysis of the dynamic U.S. environmental services industry in light of changing economic and political conditions. CH2M Hill Ltd. leads the list for the third year in a row. The top 10 firms include:

1) CH2M Hill Ltd., Englewood, Colo.
2) Veolia Environnement North America, Chicago
3) URS Corp., San Francisco
4) Bechtel, San Francisco
5) Tetra Tech Inc., Pasadena, Calif.
6) Fluor Corp., Irving, Texas
7) EnergySolutions LLC, Salt Lake City
8) AECOM Technology Corp., Los Angeles
9) Jacobs Engineering Group, Pasadena, Calif.
10) MWH Global, Broomfield, Colo.

ENR’s Top 200 Environmental Firms survey provides an annual look at a market that, this year, exceeded $52 billion in global revenue from environmental services reported in 2008, a record amount. List rankings are based on revenue firms report for work in market sectors that include hazardous and nuclear waste cleanup, water supply and wastewater treatment design and construction, air pollution control and environmental management and permitting.

The overview by ENR editors Debra Rubin, Pam Hunter, Bruce Buckley and Tony Illia adds context to the numbers and looks at the players in various market segments, by type of work performed and in global markets where they worked in 2008. The report contrasts that review with expectations for 2009, which will be significantly impacted by the recession, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and resulting actions taken by firms, such as cutting staff while expecting to sustain a competitive pace for current and future projects. The article postulates that aggressive players, buoyed by last year’s high revenue and increased backlog, may be better positioned to seize opportunities this year, but face new competition and financial constraints.
