Speedy Hire Launches Internet Service for Remote Locations

Speedy Hire, the U.K.’s largest equipment rental company has launched a new facility to provide jobsites with an Internet connection within five working days, quicker than most providers the company said. The new service has been launched internationally and will be available across most of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Major contractors that do business with Speedy, such as Carillion and Balfour Beatty, are among the first to use the service.

Known as Speedy Sky, the service is available via ka-band satellite and can offer download speeds of up to 10MB and upload speeds of up to 2MB. Full service can be offered in remote locations, where applications such as utilities, oil and gas extraction or wind farm construction can take advantage.

Speedy developed the product in response to typical problems faced by contractors including delays in the installation of a physical infrastructure, prohibitive excess installation charges, short-term sites and slow connection speeds. The service has a four-week minimum contract period, including hardware and onsite support and can be set up in a few days.

“Modern construction sites present a unique communications challenge,” said Mike Pirozek, business unit director for communications, Speedy Asset Services. “Most are transient, and many are on greenfield land where traditional communications infrastructure has not been installed. Yet, like any modern workplace, construction sites must have access to high-speed, reliable broadband in order to function effectively. Waiting for a land survey to be conducted and cables to be installed can cause significant delays to projects.”

Speedy Sky is the latest initiative launched by Speedy, which this year has initiated Lean Site, an efficiency advisory service, and Speedy Assist, a support service for small and medium enterprises.

Speedy Hire is based in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, U.K.
