Safway Services LLC has been named the 2011 Large Contractor of the Year at the Valero Benicia Refinery in Benicia, Calif. Safway, the country’s largest scaffolding rental company, was recognized for performance, productivity and safety, which included zero OSHA-recordable incidents. It is the second time in four years that Safway received this recognition from the refinery.
“During the 2011 Benicia refinery-wide turnaround, the Safway project team executed a productive and injury-free job associated with the turnaround’s scaffolding challenges,” said Sonny Menzel, central maintenance director for Valero Benicia Refinery.
Safway has regularly provided scaffolding and access solutions at the refinery since 2004. However, this year the workforce and hours grew significantly because of the scheduled refinery-wide turnaround. Safway had as many as 150 workers onsite and logged more than 111,000 man hours tp provide access throughout the facility.
“When you factor in the scope of the work we performed, with our OSHA recordable incident rate, this award reflects all of the hard work our employees put into this project,” said Gary Duncan, Safway’s western division president.
Safway Services, based in Waukesha, Wis., is No. 15 on the RER 100.
