Ahern Rentals Posts Q3 Volume Increases 

Las Vegas-based Ahern Rentals posted a 10.9-percent volume increase in the third quarter, with $101.4 million in total revenue compared with $91.4 million for last year’s third quarter. Rental volume jumped a robust 13.5 percent from $78.4 million a year ago to $89 million in this year’s third quarter....

Finning Increases Total Volume in Q3; Rental Volume Flat 

Finning International last week reported record third-quarter revenue of CD $1.5 billion (about U.S. $1.24 billion) for 2008, an increase of 10.1 percent compared with the third quarter of 2007. Earnings on continuing operations were $103.4 million in the third quarter of 2008, a decrease of 5.9 percent compared with the same period last year. Third-quarter net income from continuing operations was $64.8 million or $0.37 diluted earnings per share, a 5-percent increase compared with the same period last year....

Essex Crane Rental Bullish After Strong Nine Months 

Essex Crane Rental Corp. posted a 28 percent third-quarter rental volume jump from $12.7 million in last year’s third quarter to $16.3 million this year. Rental EBITDA for the third quarter of 2008 leapt 40.9 percent to $12 million, excluding a one-time charge of $350,000 associated with the sale of the business to Hyde Park, compared with $8.5 million in last year’s third quarter....

Delta Rigging & Tools Acquires Kelly Wire Rope 

Delta Rigging & Tools, a leading provider of wire rope, rigging and lifting equipment, today announced the acquisition of Kelly Wire Rope. Vancouver, B.C., Canada-based WesternOne Equity, which has developed a rental network based on the acquisition of several rental companies in western Canada, last week posted a 32.5-percent third-quarter volume increase and a 46.7-percent volume increase for the first nine months of 2008. The increases are largely based on acquisitions that have increased the size of WesternOne’s business....

In a joint effort, the American Rental Association, Associated Equipment Distributors, Association of Equipment Manufacturers and the North American Equipment Dealers Association are urging for economic stimulus action from the United States Senate and House of Representatives....

Acme Lift Hires New CFO 

Acme Lift Co., a leading re-renter of self-propelled aerial work platforms in North America, last week named Don Johnston chief financial officer. Johnston has a 30-year background in financing and accounting, 28 of those in financing and accounting. He has worked in a variety of sectors, including insurance, manufacturing and real estate. He joins the company after a 13-year stint as CFO of Schaefer-Smith-Ankeney/Compass Insurance Agency....

HERC’s Q3 Rental Revenues Drop 6.8% 

Worldwide third-quarter equipment rental revenues dropped 6.8 percent for Hertz Equipment Rental Corp., to $433.1 million, compared to $464.9 million for last year’s third quarter. For the first nine months of 2008, revenues were flat, dropping from $1,287.8 million in last year’s third quarter to $1,287.4 million in this year’s third quarter....

Kawasaki, Hitachi and TCO Form Wheel Loader Alliance 

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi Construction Machinery Ltd. And TCM Corp. last week reached an agreement to form an alliance focusing on their wheel loader businesses. The new corporation will consist of Kawasaki’s wheel loader operation, of which Hitachi will obtain a 34-percent stake through newly issued shares....

Hyde Park Finalizes Essex Crane Rental Acquisition 

Hyde Park Acquisition Corp. last week completed its acquisition of privately held Essex Holdings and its subsidiary Essex Crane Rental Corp. The acquisition was completed after Hyde Park shareholders voted to approve it, also changing its name to Essex Rental Corp. Based in the Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Essex is one of North America’s largest providers of lattice-boom crawler cranes and attachments with more than 350 cranes and attachments in its fleet....

Cashman Equipment Moves into Henderson Headquarters 

Cashman Equipment has begun moving its operations into its new headquarters in Henderson, Nev., CEO MaryKaye Cashman told the Las Vegas Review Journal. The 300,000-square-foot, 42-acre facility will include a 23,414-square-foot Cat Rental Store with an expanded line of equipment, floor displays, service bays and a corporate dispatch department. Cashman’s Power Solutions division will be housed in a 32,266-square-foot building with chassis dynamometer diagnostic capabilities and new off-highway engine service bays, as well as enhanced service bays for on-highway vehicles....

Spider Adds Sales Representatives in Houston

Western States Caterpillar to Reduce Work Force 

Western States Equipment Co., a Caterpillar dealer based in Meridian, Idaho, said last week that it will lay off an undisclosed number of employees, affecting workers in all of the company’s locations. United Rentals 3Q Revenue Drops 12 Percent 

Greenwich, Conn.-based United Rentals last week announced financial results for its third quarter 2008. Rental revenue was $677 million and total revenue was $873 million for the third quarter 2008, compared with $718 million and $990 million, respectively, for the same period last year, indications that the company is feeling the effects of the construction downturn. ...

RSC’s 3Q08 Earnings Flat  

RSC Holdings Inc. last week announced third-quarter 2008 rental revenues of $419 million, up 1.7 percent from $412 million in last year's third quarter and representing 90 percent of total revenues. Total revenues were $467 million, up 1.1 percent over the comparable year-ago period. ...

Jacobs, Hoxie and Plugge to be Inducted in Rental Hall of Fame 

Brad Jacobs, who spearheaded the dramatic consolidation of the rental industry in the late 1990s as founder of United Rentals, heads the latest American Rental Association’s Hall of Fame inductees. Jacobs will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Atlanta in March along with rental industry pioneer Mitch Hoxie of Aero Rentals, Tucson, Ariz.; and Harold Plugge Jr., founder of the Taylor Rental franchise....
