San Leandro, Calif.-based Bigge Crane and Rigging was recently hired to transport and deliver a large vessel from Irvine, Calif., to a Bay Area chemical plant. Complicating the job was that it had to be delivered Thanksgiving week, giving Bigge only three days to plan, transport, and deliver the vessel before the holiday oversize load restrictions would shut down the Bigge transporter.
Bigge was contacted only one day before the holiday week after another trucking company bailed out because it couldn’t meet the plant’s strict time schedule. Bigge quickly mobilized a 600-ton capacity Demag AC 500 mobile crane to pick up the 93- by 17-foot-diameter vessel. Because of its experience in time-sensitive long-haul operations, Bigge was able to get the move permitted and transported in just under two days.
After arriving to the plant on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Bigge set the vessel the next day, allowing deliveries to the plant by rail to resume the following Monday.
