Honda this year launched its mid-GX engines line. Completely redesigned, the GX120, GX160 and GX200 are single-cylinder, horizontal-shaft engines replacing the existing models. The line is designed for commercial turf applications, generators, water pumps, pressure washers and an array of construction/industrial machines. While dimensionally equivalent to the engines they replace, the GX series offers improved fuel economy through changes in valve timing, compression ratio, carburetor settings and cooling system modification. The engines feature more stringent emissions standards. Lower noise levels are achieved through a change in muffler structure design, breather valve, push rod materials and crank/case cover rigidity, with reduced vibration accomplished through a lighter engine piston.
“Because the new engines essentially match the dimensions of the existing GX models they replace, original equipment manufacturers will not have to modify the designs of their commercial equipment,” said Mike Rudolph senior manager of Honda Engines. The new Honda GX120, GX160 and GX200 mid GX engines meet EPA Phase 3 exhaust and evaporative emissions standards.

Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power introduced four Vanguard single-cylinder engines in 2010 with gross horsepower ratings ranging from 5.5 hp to 10.0 hp. The engines feature an integrated switch that simultaneously shuts off the ignition and the fuel during transport when engines are subjected to vibration, which can cause fuel to flow through the engine and into the oil. Fuel in the oil drastically reduces viscosity, resulting in more friction, increased wear and shorter engine life. The TransportGuard system, ensures that fuel stays where it belongs and helps eliminate fouled plugs, hydraulic lock, cylinder wash down and crankcase oil dilution caused by transportation. In addition to solving oil dilution issues, engineers designed each component and integrated technology to efficiently work together to raise durability and reliability standards. An all-metal fuel tank reduces emissions, saves fuel and is mounted directly to the engine block. The air filter is water-repellant and protected by a full metal cage; features include an innovative triple-seal design to dramatically decrease dirt, dust and debris intake and a large sediment filter enables that sediment collected in the clear bowl to drain through a “no-tools” valve.

Volvo Construction Equipment has received Tier-4 Interim certification for its Volvo D11, D13 and D16 engines. The engines are built with ultra high pressure variable fuel injection systems, cooled exhaust gas recirculation, precise variable-geometry turbo turbocharger controls, a new engine management system and an integrated exhaust after-treatment system, equipped with a particulate filter and thermal regenerator. The V-ACT system offers enhanced engine monitoring, greater control capabilities and higher torque. EGR lowers the amount of oxygen in the combustion chamber, reducing combustion peak temperatures. The after-treatment system reduces PM by 90 percent.

Subaru's SP Series air-cooled engines offer advanced overhead cam technology. Designed for the light commercial and premium residential engine markets, the engines are designed for easier starts and minimizing noise and emissions, good for use with pressure washers, generators, pumps, go-carts and lawn-and-garden equipment. The series includes the SP170, a 5.7-hp, 169cc displacement engine, as well as the SP210, a 211cc displacement unit offering 7 hp. The units feature chain-driven OHC technology combined with a hemispherical combustion chamber. Intake and exhaust valves are positioned to lower resistance for the air/fuel mixture, while a high compression ratio produces greater power and torque. Fewer moving parts and optimized-capacity rigid mufflers reduce mechanical noise. An automatic decompression system reduces the required pulling force by 30 to 40 percent compared to older OHV engine designs. Components such as cast-iron cylinder liners, dual ball bearings and high-quality piston rings enhance durability, making the engines applicable for the outdoor power equipment industry.

Perkins' new 400F, the latest addition to its 400 Series, meets Tier-4 Final/Stage IIIB regulations taking effect January 2013 in the EPA above 25 horsepower and in the EU above 49.5 horsepower. The units are simplified for customers with a 97-percent carryover of components from the previous Tier engine. The after-treatment uses passive regeneration, with systems in place to provide active regeneration capability, effectively burning the soot in the diesel particulate filter, with no impact on the duty cycle. Minimum changes mean little or no redesign for OEMs. The 400 Series improves fuel consumption, minimizes running costs and heat rejection, which offers improved ambient clearance.

JCB's Ecomax T4 4.4-liter engine achieves Interim Tier 4 standards, without a diesel particulate filter. It achieves increased fuel consumption through increased back pressure to the engine. Now with an extended range from 74 to 173 hp for a wide range of off-highway equipment, used in power generation, water pumping, crushing and screening, forklifts and the marine sector. With second-generation common rail fuel injection technology, injection pressure has been raised to 2,000 bar and nozzle hole geometry has been refined to provide effective atomization and distribution of fuel within the cylinder. The engines achieve 5- to 10-percent fuel consumption improvement. The structural architecture, componentry and systems will remain the same for Tier 4/Stage 4 Final regulations.

Cummins QSL0 9-liter engine achieves 2014 EPA Tier-4 Final and EU Stage IV standards, combining the Cummins Compact Catalyst with selective catalyst reduction. The CCC is scaled up in size for the 9-liter platform. At Tier 4 Interim levels, the QSB6.7 and QSL9 engines achieve up to 5-percent improved fuel efficiency compared to Tier 3, and fuel efficiency will be further increased for Tier-4 Final 2014 by an additional 2 percent to 3 percent. The CCC-SCR after-treatment will be available in multiple configurations, including switchback, horizontal and vertical. Optimization work will continue to refine after-treatment packaging.

John Deere Power Systems
The PowerTech PSX 13.5-liter diesel engine from John Deere Power Systems has been certified as compliant with Interim Tier 4 regulations as well as EU State III B and California Air Resources Board emissions regulations. The engines include cooled exhaust gas recirculation for NOx control, adding an exhaust filter for reducing particulate matter. The PowerTech OSX 13.5-liter engine features full-authority electronic controls, a 4-valve cylinder head, a high-pressure fuel system, series turbocharging and an air-to-air after-cooling system.
