Atlas Copco recently won an order to supply drill rigs and related equipment for the building of road and rail tunnels connecting sites at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The order, from the Russian construction company Bamtonnelstroy, will be booked in the first quarter and includes tunneling rigs, remote controlled surface drilling rigs, as well as rock drilling tools and equipment for reinforcing the tunnels. The first deliveries will take place during the spring.

“We are proud to have been picked for a project that puts such high demands on the productivity and reliability of the equipment,” says Björn Rosengren, business area president, Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique. “Our extensive aftermarket organization in Russia, including the Sochi region, was another key factor in winning the order.”

Atlas Copco’s equipment will be used in the construction of a new highway and railroad between the Adler resort in the Sochi district and the Rosa Khutor Olympic ski resort.

“The Olympic Games in Sochi are a unique event, supporting the construction sector in the region, but we see good opportunities also in other parts of Russia, where government stimulus packages are now being implemented to counter the weak economic climate,” Björn Rosengren says.
