Volvo Construction Equipment has announced the 2009-2010 schedule for its Volvo Road Institute, a comprehensive training school that provides practical instruction for contractors and dealers in the asphalt paving industry. Course curriculum ranges from two- to four-day sessions beginning in September and continuing through May 2010.

“The Volvo Road Institute continues to be the leader in training for the asphalt industry,” said Dan Snedecor, manager of sales and operator training. “Our philosophy is to not only teach participants how to operate the equipment, but to also educate on best paving practices.”

Nearing its fifth decade, the Volvo Road Institute will now focus more of its training efforts on the customer and various occupations within the HMA paving industry. The Volvo Road Institute provides the paving contractor, operator, agency and industry personnel with the important link between equipment technology and industry applications. Operator courses and seminars are designed to improve an operator’s skills with both theory and hands-on operation of asphalt paving and compaction equipment.

Volvo operates two Volvo Road Institute training facilities in the U.S.: one in Chambersburg, Pa., and the other in Phoenix.

The Volvo Road Institute has changed its format from previous years to focus on operations and application. Five courses are offered in paver and compactor operation and maintenance, applications, automatic grade and slope control systems, screed operation and soil compaction application. Courses are structured to provide classroom and hands-on practical training on asphalt pavers, soil and asphalt compactors. Topics in each session range from daily and weekly maintenance to the operation and application of asphalt paving. Naturally, safety is included as part of each course curriculum, since it is one of the Volvo core values.

The curriculum is designed for operators and crew personnel, as well as state DOT administrators and asphalt production professionals. Class size is limited for ideal instructor to student ratios and team learning. Tuition is $500 per student per course.
