Finning’s Q4 Profit Drops Despite Volume Boost
Finning International last week reported record quarterly revenues of almost CA $1.6 billion (about U.S. $1.27 billion according to current exchange rates) for the fourth quarter of 2008, a 7.3-percent increase compared with the fourth quarter of 2007. The jump was driven by strong demand for customer support services, particularly in Canada and South America. However, as a result of non-recurring costs and charges in the fourth quarter of 2008, Finning posted a loss from continuing operations before interest and taxes of CA $84.5 million, and fourth-quarter net loss from continuing operations of CA $106.8 million or 62 cents per diluted share....

Western States Dump Hunger Campaign Collects 116,000 Pounds for Local Food Banks
Meridian, Idaho-based Western States Equipment Co., in partnership with local food banks in four states, last week concluded the Dump Hunger campaign. The campaign, which began Dec. 22, gathered more than 116,000 pounds of food — surpassing its goal of 75,000 pounds. The food gathered from Western States’ 11 locations filled the bed of a Caterpillar 730 dump truck, which is capable of holding 75,000 pounds, and half the bed of an additional truck....
Toromont Posts ’08 Increases But Slow Fourth Quarter
While overall Toromont Industries posted a 12-percent increase in 2008, the equipment group was flat year over year and dropped 4 percent in the fourth quarter. Rental revenue from its Battlefield Equipment Cat Rental division increased 3 percent from CA $147.4 million in 2007 to $151.3 million in 2008 (about U.S. $122 million according to current exchange rates)....

Ecco Equipment Founder Don Schmid Dies
Don Schmid, founder of Santa Ana, Calif.-based heavy equipment rental specialist Ecco Equipment, died of cancer last month at the age of 78. Schmid founded Ecco Construction in 1958. The company specialized in construction of reservoirs, flood control and bridge projects. Ecco got into rentals by accident when a crane operator, during a period of slow utilization, got Schmid’s permission to rent an idle crane to another contractor. When Ecco needed it for a project and found it was still in use by the renter, it bought more and the cycle began, leading to rental as an ongoing business....
