United Rentals last week named William Plummer as chief financial officer, replacing Martin Welch, effective Dec. 1. Livermore, Calif.-based McGrath RentCorp, a rental provider of modular buildings for classroom and office space, and electronic test equipment, last week announced that it has agreed to acquire privately held Adler Tank Rentals for approximately $90 million. The purchase price will consist of approximately $89 million in cash and 40,000 shares of McGrath RentCorp common stock, and is expected to close before the end of 2008....

The first involves the purchase of the business and assets related to power rental of Cummins in India. The second involves the sale of Aggreko’s European oil-free compressed air rental business to Atlas Copco....

Industry Veteran Larry Pedersen Dies 

Popular rental industry veteran Larry Pedersen, CEO of Campbell, Calif.-based A Tool Shed, died last week at the age of 67. Pedersen died of an apparent pulmonary embolism, six weeks after a successful colon cancer operation. ...

JLG Industries Breaks Ground on New Manufacturing Facility in China 

JLG Industries, along with its parent company, Oshkosh Corp., broke ground last week for a new manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China. The announcement is another step in Oshkosh’s strategic business initiatives to meet the demands of a global economy and the growing demand for aerial work platforms in the Chinese and Asian markets. The new facility will produce JLG access equipment specifically for the Asian market. JLG currently has manufacturing operations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Dakota, U.S., and in Maasmechelen, Belgium; Tonneins, France; and Medias, Romania....

Neff Revenues Drop 12 Percent in Third Quarter 

Neff Rental posted $61.4 million in rental revenue in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, a 12.4-percent decline compared with $70.1 million in last year’s third quarter. Total revenues declined at a similar rate, 12.3 percent, from $81.4 million in last year’s third quarter to $71.4 million this year....

Terex Launches Dedicated Compact Equipment Line in North America 

Terex Construction last week introduced a dedicated compact equipment line, distributed throughout North America. A Tough Equipment Market Through 2009, OEMs Say 

The construction equipment manufacturing industry expects continued business declines in the United States through year-end 2008 of 8.6 percent, followed by flat growth in 2009 of 0.4 percent, according to the annual “Outlook” survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. However, sales to worldwide markets are expected to increase 8.5 percent by year-end 2008 and gain 5.4 percent in 2009....

Rental volume jumped a robust 13.5 percent from $78.4 million a year ago to $89 million in this year’s third quarter....

Finning Increases Total Volume in Q3; Rental Volume Flat 

Finning International last week reported record third-quarter revenue of CD $1.5 billion (about U.S. $1.24 billion) for 2008, an increase of 10.1 percent compared with the third quarter of 2007. Earnings on continuing operations were $103.4 million in the third quarter of 2008, a decrease of 5.9 percent compared with the same period last year. Third-quarter net income from continuing operations was $64.8 million or $0.37 diluted earnings per share, a 5-percent increase compared with the same period last year....
