Cold-Weather Pump Package Warms Working Conditions

Thompson Pump introduces the Arctic Knight, cold-weather package that allows a diesel-driven pump to be used in climates as cold as minus 40 F. The system is designed to eliminate the traditional problems of operating pumps in cold climates, such as frozen liquids in the pump, cracked pump housings and engine-starting problems. It also eliminates the need for accessory items such as block heaters, fuel heaters and glow plugs. Another key feature of the system is the automatic start and stop function, which allows the pump to be turned on and off automatically based on the liquid level. This allows for unmanned operation, which is especially important in frigid temperatures.

The pump system works via a self-contained, thermostat-controlled heating system that operates from the on-board fuel supply to regulate and maintain the temperature inside the enclosure. To prevent liquids from freezing when the pump is off, an auto-drain feature automatically drains the fluid inside the pump and piping system.

“This unit does not require special diesel fuels, engine oils, radiator coolants, auxiliary heating equipment, louvers or additional power to operate,” says Kristen Petersen, marketing coordinator for Thompson Pump. “The system is completely independent and self-sufficient.”
