Wacker Construction Equipment AG, based in Munich, and Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG, Linz, Austria, recently announced plans to merge during the course of 2007. The shareholders of both companies and management of Wacker Construction Equipment AG recently signed a letter of memorandum agreeing to the merger. The new company will be called Wacker Neuson AG....

Rental Penetration to Reach 50% in Europe, Caterpillar Predicts 

Rental companies will buy half of all construction machines in Europe within four years, a Caterpillar official predicted last week. Walker Wins Caterpillar Rental Loyalty Awards 

Walker Express – the Cat Rental Store, the equipment rental division of Walker Machinery Co., was recently honored for achieving the highest customer loyalty among Caterpillar dealers in North America in 2006. Based in the Charleston, W. Va., suburb of Belle, the company also achieved the highest overall customer loyalty and overall customer satisfaction in Caterpillar’s Eastern Region, as well as the highest overall customer loyalty in inside and outside sales in the region, including 14 dealers in 17 states....

Holt Caterpillar Acquires Longview Shell Building 

San Antonio-based Holt Cat, which sells, rents and services Caterpillar equipment, last week approved the $1.3 million acquisition of a shell building in Longview, Texas. Holt Cat will move a portion of its Longview operation into the shell building, while maintaining its existing Longview facility. The contract calls for an additional $4 million to be invested into the building. ...

Construction Hiring Outpaces Overall Employment Trends 

Nonfarm payroll employment, led by a 56,000-job increase in construction, rose 180,000 in March, seasonally adjusted, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The construction gain almost completely reversed a weather-related drop of 61,000 in February. Construction employment has risen 0.3 percent since March 2006, compared to total employment increasing 1.4 percent in that time period. However, employment in nonresidential building, specialty trades, and heavy and civil engineering has added 146,000 jobs in that period, about a 3.4-percent increase, while residential building and specialty trades lost 129,000 jobs, a 3.6-percent clip....

Ace Rents, Lancaster, Pa., is preparing to exit the construction equipment rental business to focus entirely on party rental, the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal reported. Ace decided to shut down its equipment rental business after Strober Organization, which sells building supplies, agreed to lease more than 60,000 square feet of Ace’s 83,000-square-foot facility....

Metrolift Hires Veteran Hofmeyer to Sales Staff 

Sugar Grove, Ill.-based Metrolift last week named John Hofmeyer to its sales staff. Hofmeyer is a 20-year rental industry veteran who worked as sales manager for NES Rentals and Brambles Equipment Services covering Chicago and the Wisconsin and Northwestern Indiana markets. Hofmeyer is returning to Chicago after working for Aggreko for two years in St. Louis covering the central United States from Missouri to Northern Texas. ...
