Komatsu

The new PC40MR-2 compact hydraulic excavator from Komatsu is designed for contractors in a variety of construction, utility, landscaping and other small- to mid-sized applications. For improved comfort, the PC40MR-2's operator compartment has been expanded to facilitate easier entry and exit and provide more room for operating the machine's foot pedals and joystick controls. The machine features a maximum digging height of 18 feet, 3 inches and a maximum dumping height of 12 feet, 8 inches. The PC40MR-2 is also compatible with Komatsu's Road Liner track option, which offers the strength and durability of a steel track with the versatility and reduced ground damage of a rubber track.

Case

Case has upgraded four of its CX compact excavators to be Tier II certified while increasing engine horsepower, hydraulic pressure and hydraulic flow. The upgraded Case CX27B (pictured), CX31B, CX36B and CX50B compact excavators are equipped with a hydraulically controlled backfill blade for added machine stability and light dozing work. The newly designed backfill blade boils material in front of the blade, allowing for efficient backfilling. Increased lift work range on the backfill blade improves trailer loading. Cab models have wider front glass for better sight lines and increased door width for ease of entry. The models also feature zero tail swing and a center-swing boom for maximum productivity in tight working spaces.

Volvo Construction Equipment

Volvo's new ECR short-swing compact excavators are designed to meet the needs of operators who work in narrow, confined spaces. To maximize operator comfort, each machine has a spacious operator compartment and an adjustable suspension seat with a high back and armrests. The machines have been designed to reduce noise both inside and outside the cab to reduce operator fatigue and improve safety on jobsites. The cab is installed on rubber mountings to help reduce vibration. New generation direct injection Volvo diesel engines provide performance and low exhaust emissions. The compact excavators are available with an auto-idling system similar to the system found on Volvo's larger excavators.

Kubota Tractor Corp.

The 4-ton KX121-3 compact excavator from Kubota is designed to be more productive with an optional hydraulic angle blade. The KX121-3 has a maximum digging depth of 11 feet, 6 inches and is powered by a 42-hp Kubota diesel engine. For customers using the machine for trenching, the angle blade allows for backfilling while traveling in one direction rather than repositioning the machine. A simple movement of the dozer blade lever accurately raises and lowers the blade, as well as adjusts the angle of operation.

Trae Grimes, landscape architect for Reynolds Plantation in Eatonton, Ga., designs and installs waterways, retaining walls, irrigation and lighting systems and places plants and sod. “I love my KX121-3,” Grimes says. “The new hydraulic angle blade has reduced by two-thirds the time it takes to backfill.”

Yanmar

Yanmar offers seven ViO compact excavators featuring true zero-tail swing and left and right boom swing so operators can track adjacent to walls for maximum digging and trenching productivity. Large dozing blades coupled with Yanmar's VICTAS offset track design (except the Vi015 with variable undercarriage) combine to provide stability without increasing track width. The ViO models have digging depths ranging from 8 feet, 7 inches to 15.5 feet, and are powered by Yanmar Clean & Silent CARB-compliant diesel engines that feature one-side servicing for major quick-change items.

Ditch Witch

The MX272, MX352 and MX502 mini-excavators from Ditch Witch are designed to be rugged, versatile and easy to maintain. The mini-excavators are able to accommodate a range of attachments, and their full-circle operator station rotation and pivoting boom design enable the operator to make offset excavations adjacent to foundations, fences, and other obstacles, and also permit digging and depositing spoil by the machine without having to reposition it. An X-track frame minimizes the accumulation of dirt and debris during operation, and full-opening engine and side hoods provide easier access for routine engine servicing.

Gehl

Gehl's new 503Z, 603, 753Z and 803 excavator models include zero-tail-swing and short-tail-swing models in 5-, 6-, 7- and 8-metric ton classes. The zero-tail-swing concept on models 503Z and 753Z allows the superstructure to rotate entirely within the dimensions of the tracks without overhang. This enables the machine to operate close to walls without risk of contact and operate on congested sites without fear of obstructing traffic. The 603 and 803 short-tail-swing models are designed in a similar manner to the zero-tail-swing units, but with an emphasis on increased stability and greater lifting capacity than previous excavator models. All four excavators are equipped with Yanmar TNV Series Tier II diesel engines, which range from 47 to 69 gross hp. The cab is built with an adjustable seat headrest and armrests, and features a redesigned dashboard with all controls and indicators within the operator's direct field of vision.

Mustang Manufacturing

Mustang's new 5003ZT and 7503ZT zero-tail-swing and 6003 and 8003 short-tail-swing compact excavator models are designed to improve maneuverability and visibility for the operator. Each model was designed from the cab out, meaning the operator's comfort and ability to accomplish tasks as efficiently as possible were priorities in the development of these units. The new side-mounted engine compartment on each model features a built-in barrier that limits the engine noise and vibration. Lubrication points on the machines are color-coded to indicate how frequently the operator needs to grease those points. A tilting cab and improved placement enhances accessibility to the rotary transmission, battery and hydraulics.

Jesse Royall, vice president of Sydnor Hydro in Richmond, Va., uses a Mustang 8003 compact excavator to install water systems in a residential community. “The short-tail design, 360-degree rotating cab, and independent right and left boom swing of the Mustang 8003 is what convinced us to go with this unit,” says Royall. “The Mustang 8003 has a really well thought-out design with easy access to components.”

Takeuchi

Takeuchi's new 3.5-ton model TB135 incorporates new safety and performance enhancing features, including standard travel alarm, TOPS/FOPS canopy or cab, retractable seat belt and control tower lockout system of the excavator's operating controls and travel levers. The TB135 features a tilt-up operator's platform for service access and an engine shutdown/return to idle system that helps guard against abnormal engine temperature or oil pressure conditions. The TB135 is available with steel or rubber tracks and has a maximum dig depth of 11 feet, 2 inches. An EPA emission compliant, low noise 27.8-hp Yanmar engine powers the TB135's horsepower efficient variable displacement piston pumps, which automatically adjust digging power and speed to match operating conditions.

Bobcat

The new 323 compact excavator features two-speed travel motors and a new hydraulic system built for the construction industry because the features provide increased travel speed and improved control while digging. The 323 has a digging depth of 7 feet, 6 inches and a maximum reach of 12 feet, 10 inches at ground level. The two-speed travel motors provide a 1.4 mph low travel speed and a 2.4 mph high travel speed, increasing the machine's mobility around jobsites. The turf-friendly rubber tracks distribute the operating weight of the 3,655-pound excavator over a larger area. With a retracted width of 39 inches and an expanded width of 53 inches, the 323 is able to gain access to confined areas. The compact excavator offers a 7.9 gpm of auxiliary hydraulic flow and is powered by a liquid-cooled, 13.3-hp Tier II diesel engine.
