Volvo To Lay Off 110 Employees
Volvo Construction Equipment, Asheville, N.C., plans to revise manufacturing operations at its Asheville plant, resulting in a reduction of about 110 employees. The plant will change to an assembly only facility from a fabrication and assembly plant, on Dec. 1.
The company will seek fabrication suppliers in North America for long-term production operations. Products other than current wheel loaders and articulated haulers may be assembled at the Asheville plant in the future. The company expects the annual total cost reduction to be $10 million.
The unit said it would reduce its worldwide workforce by about 950 from 8,500, due to weak market conditions. The company expected about 600 cuts to come from Europe, 140 from North America, 190 in Asia and 20 in South America.
