Realizing the Power of Generators
To get the best performance from a generator, the engine's rpm should be checked on a regular basis because any change in rpm directly affects the machine's voltage and frequency output. Engine full throttle rpm should always be checked at no load and full load conditions.
Generators with an automatic idle control system will usually have a higher low idle speed to prevent engine stalling when a sudden load is applied. Always re-jet a gasoline engine when required, for high elevation applications.
Generator service tips:
- Check air and fuel filters on a regular basis.
- Change oil per manufacturer's recommendations.
- Always use clean fuel.
Symptoms of a generator poorly maintained or out of adjustment:
- Generator capacity is reduced.
- Tools run hot and cause premature failures.
- Generator circuit breakers trip prematurely.
- Thermal protection switch on capacitor start motors trips due to voltage drop and can't reach operating speed.
- Excessive voltage drops when using extension cords.
- Inconsistent frequency cause damage to sensitive electronic equipment.
- Engine stalls with a sudden heavy load.
