Engine Placement Offers Simple Serviceability

Terex' new SKL160H wheel loader offers an operating load and full turn position of 7,000 pounds. It sports a 2.25 cubic yard capacity and an articulated tipping load of 14,000 pounds. The 102-hp Perkins turbo-charged diesel engine delivers the power and speed operators need to hit the ground running.

The SKL160H comes standard with the third spool, auxiliary off the front of the machine, allowing operators to add various attachments, and features the option for an attachment removal system. Because the machine is driven hydrostatically, the engine is located in the back of the unit, allowing the counterweight to be distributed throughout the machine.

“The advantage is that the engine can be easily serviced from the ground without having to climb up on the unit,” says Lowell Stout, product manager for Terex. “Also, the engine weight being at the rear of the machine means less counterweight is needed to achieve desired tipping load.”

The loader also incorporates a modified Z-bar linkage into the design. The linkage provides high breakout forces when a bucket is installed and parallel lift when forks are installed. This eliminates a dealer having to inventory a Z-bar linkage loader and an IT loader, which forces a customer to choose one or the other. With this design, the customer gets both, Stout says.

The pilot-operated control lever and tilt telescopic steering wheel make for low-effort operation. The weight adjustable spring-cushioned driver's seat and low noise levels create a comfortable ride.
