In a Complex World, Atlas Copco Goes Back to Basics

Leave it to one of the world's largest construction equipment makers to cut through the increasingly sophisticated world of power tools.

“Our company philosophy is ‘simpler is better’,” says Peter Bigwood, president of Atlas Copco Construction Tools.

With that in mind, the company's new TEX P60 and TEX P90 (pictured) pneumatic breakers feature 30 percent fewer parts than a conventional pneumatic breaker, reducing the likelihood of machine downtime and costly repairs. The body of both units is a one-piece casting that eliminates the fronthead, backhead and sidebolts found on conventional breakers without sacrificing performance.

The TEX P90 produces 1,260 blows per minute and has the largest hammer piston in the industry — 5.4 pounds. It is 28 inches long and weighs 93 pounds. Both the TEX P60 and TEX P90 feature a smooth-start trigger that offers operators greater control when starting the machine by allowing them to reach full power in two stages. Also, the units feature a swivel coupling that rotates even when the air pressure is on, an easily accessible built-in oiler and an integral muffler.

While simplifying the machine, Atlas Copco has ensured the machine lives up to the rigorous standards customers have come to expect, particularly the rental industry which is often the guinea pig for new equipment.

“Every time someone comes up with something new, they want to try it on the rental industry,” says Bigwood, noting the TEX P60 and P90 were tested for more than a year in environments ranging from the deserts of Morocco to the frozen tundra of Sweden. “We don't want to introduce something with bugs in it.”
