Cat Breaks New Ground with D-Series Backhoes
Caterpillar's new D-Series backhoe loader line features excavator-style joystick controls on the 420D and 430D models and several other advancements on the 416D (pictured).
The standard pilot-operated joystick controls on the 420D and 430D maximize performance. Using a single lever for all loader functions will be a "smooth, easy transition for operators with excavator experience," says senior marketing engineer Kevin Hershberger. A pattern changer is available for backhoe loader operators who prefer the traditional two-lever mechanical controls.
Both machines are available with integrated tool-carrier configurations that benefit from a parallel-lift loader linkage and an optional hydraulic quick coupler for changing work tools such as pallet forks, material handling arms, brooms and a variety of buckets.
The 416D, available with mechanical controls only, includes other features also found on the 420/430D. The backhoe bucket rotates 205 degrees - 40 degrees more than its C Series predecessor - making it easier to dig vertical walls and clamp materials for loading, Hershberger says. The bucket features a single pin position and the link has an integrated lifting eye.
The 416D, which is less expensive than the 420D, retains a narrow excavator-style boom for better sight-lines and additional clearance over obstacles while digging or loading.
The standard power-shuttle transmission permits on-the-go upward and downward shifting of all gears, enabling the operator to make instant direction changes.
