Atlas Copco

The Penta Series of light hydraulic breakers feature Krupp percussion technology and offer service weights ranging from 200 to 795 pounds. Applications include road construction, landscaping, light demolition, smaller trenching and quarry reduction breaking. To reduce excess vibration and noise, the Penta Series breakers come equipped with the VibroSilenced damping system, which reduces noise by 18 dB(A) compared with other guide systems. Additionally, a long piston stroke reduces the transmission of vibrations to the carrier, lessening the strain on the operator and the machine. The PB 420V, at 795 pounds, is specifically designed for backhoes.

Komatsu America

Excavator-type joystick controls are offered on the new WB140-2N, WB140PS-2N (pictured), WB150-2N, WB150PS-2N and the WB150AWS-2N backhoe loaders. Other recent upgrades include increased hydraulic speed; stronger, more advanced components; and Tier II-compliant engines. Both PS models feature Komatsu's powershift transmission and the WB150AWS-2N is an all-wheel steer backhoe with tires of equal size and also features the powershift transmission. The cab has been engineered to offer operators improved visibility, comfort and easier access to controls and levers.

“The WB140-2 plays a big supporting role in what we do,” says Rob Dolmaten, general superintendent for utilities contractor Felix Associates' Port St. Lucie, Fla., division. “It never stops — it's either digging receiving pits, taking up asphalt and distributing pipe fittings, doing light backfilling, pulling out concrete driveways, and installing pipe on short runs where there are tie-ins. It's so versatile that it's on the go constantly. Our punchout crews also use it to grade ditch lines for sod replacement. The WB140-2 is truly an all-around machine, because its size is perfect — it can do both small and big jobs.”

John Deere

The new Worksite Pro Hydraulic Quick Coupler is designed to allow customers to quickly pick up and switch between backhoe loader attachments so they can get the job done faster. The coupler is designed for John Deere's 310G, 310SG, 410G and 710G backhoe loaders. It features a single floating hydraulic cylinder that engages attachments with ease, the company says. The control switch is center mounted on the front console, and there's no need to hold a function-over relief and a switch at the same time, as was necessary with the previous design. The hook-on pins are made of high-strength steel, enhancing the coupler's durability.

Bobcat

Bobcat's new line of loader backhoes includes models B100, B250 and B300 (pictured), which all come standard with a Kubota diesel engine. With dig depths ranging from 9 feet, 3 inches to 11 feet, the B-Series machines offer a hydrostatic-driven transmission and one-stick loader control with a float function. Side-swing, boom and dipper cylinders are cushioned, which promotes smooth operation and machine productivity. The loader backhoes also feature spacious, platform-style cabs, hydrostatic transmissions and simple controls. A 180-degree rotating seat facilitates switching from the loader to backhoe operation.

Waylon Boyer, vice president of The Rental Store in Joplin, Mo., likes the B100 loader backhoes for their power and says that for being small, they have more power than anything else on the market. “The B100 is a great rental tool, especially for the small guy because when you rent it to a homeowner, it's small enough that they can handle it and it has enough power for the small contractor,” he says.
