Ingersoll-Rand

Ingersoll-Rand recently introduced seven new models of compact loader backhoes — the BL 275, BL 370, BL 375, BL 470, BL 475, BL 570 and BL 575. They range in horsepower from 31.5 hp on the 270 to 56 hp on the 570 unit. These new units can excavate depths up to 12 feet and are designed for utility contractors, landscapers, plumbers and rental companies. The new models use Kubota diesel engines in non-turbo and turbo charged packages. Other standard features include four-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel steer for tight turning in confined areas.

Marty Mulrooney, president of The Mulrooney Co., Liverpool, N.Y., needed a backhoe loader to use in his everyday operations, loading and unloading trucks as well as moving mulch and stone. He wanted a machine that was small and maneuverable. “I use my BL-470 everyday,” Mulrooney says. “It has made moving materials more efficient because it's so easy to use. It is my right arm in the morning.”

Kubota

Kubota Tractor Corp. introduced an optional backhoe for three M-Series tractors. The M4711 backhoe is available for the M4900, M5700 and M6800 tractor models. This is a quick-attach backhoe, with a full mount sub-frame to ensure structural integrity. Transport and swing locks can be locked into position from the operator seat for transport. Two-lever joystick controls provide smooth operation over all backhoe movements. The M4700 backhoe has a digging depth of 11 feet and a digging force, using the bucket cylinder of 6,167 pounds.

General Equipment

The Model 471 DIG-R-TACH from General Equipment Co. is specifically designed for use with lower-auxiliary hydraulic system flow rates found on popular models of compact loader backhoes, mini-excavators and compact utility loaders. The system features a universal mounting bracket that readily conforms to a wide variety of loader bucket configurations. Mounted quickly by one person, the 471 DIG-R-TACH requires no special tools, drilling or welding as the supplied bracket grips tightly with a positive locking system.

“Our customers use the DIG-R-TACH product for just about any hole-digging project,” says Rick Bierschbach, vice president of Bierschbach Equipment & Supply, Sioux Falls, S.D. “Customers seem to prefer that General augers include a hexagon drive instead of a round auger drive.”

Allmand Bros.

Powered by a Kubota, liquid-cooled diesel engine, the new Allmand TLB-225 heavy-duty compact tractor-loader-backhoe has a digging force of 2,875 pounds and an 8 foot, 4 inch digging depth. It maneuvers well in tight areas and its dual-cylinder, 180-degree hydraulically cushioned swing enables digging close to walls and obstructions. A load-sensing hydraulic steering system ensures hydraulic flow is used only when the operator is turning the steering wheel.

New Holland

The LB series loader backhoes from New Holland have been reengineered to meet the needs of today's operators. Key features include high visibility, increased lift and bucket capacities, and suitable breakout force. The backhoe is also redesigned and offers improved performance in lifting and craning operations. Engine power ranges from 90 to 108 gross hp. Available with full-time four-wheel drive, New Holland Construction loader backhoes are built on a one-piece mainframe for strength and reliability.

Volvo CE

The BL71 backhoe loader features a curved “S”-style boom, a cast iron pivot and base on the boom for improved durability, and choices of optional mechanical or hydraulic bucket quick-attach systems. The narrow boom design provides improved visibility. It also has a single bucket cylinder for improved visibility and a state-of-the-art servo-controlled joystick that makes operation easy. The joystick also permits the operator to shuttle forward and reverse at the press of a button.

Gary Tripp, owner of three Volvo Rents branches in Orlando, Fla. has two of the units in his fleet. Customers have commented on its power, breakout force, underclearance and operator comforts. “Customers that have rented it really like the machine,” Tripp says. “And we've had no mechanical problems with them.”

John Deere

The 710G is designed for backhoe jobs where a small excavator and loader are used together. It is powered by a 6-cylinder engine and has a 118 net hp John Deere 6068T diesel engine that is Tier II emissions compliant. A 70-gallon fuel tank allows the 710G to work longer without refueling than the previous model. The stabilizer downforce on the backhoe increased by 74 percent, swing torque increased by 72 percent and the bucket dig force increased by 4,000 pounds. The loader bucket dump angle increased to 45 degrees for better bucket clean-out.

JCB

The JCB 212S backhoe loader offers productivity and versatility in a compact machine. It is well suited for highway maintenance where its size and side-shifting rear frame keep lane closures to a minimum. It provides dig end performance with a dipper lift capacity of 3,260 pounds at four feet. Visibility has been improved over earlier models by using a smaller loader torsion tube for better sight of the attachments, along with the introduction of a lower hood line. An enlarged rear window in the cab also provides better vision into the trench.
