Bill Stephens, former American Rental Association counsel for more than 40 years, died of cancer recently at the age of 82.

Stephens was instrumental in the founding of the association, writing the charter and by-laws, and continuing as legal counsel until recently. He founded the Stephens Law Firm in McLean, Va., in 1955. He served as a general counsel for several corporations, and authored a book on rental contracts, published by ARA.

Stephens died at his home in Key Biscayne, Fla. A decorated World War II officer, Stephens’ ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in June 2005 with full military honors.

Stephens is survived by his wife, Arlene; son William Jr.; daughter, Renee and four grandchildren.
