Legendary aerial industry icon Frank Scarborough died July 6 of a massive stroke suffered several days before. Scarborough worked for Grove, Snorkel and UpRight in a 30-year career in the lift industry.

Scarborough started out in the management training program of Grove Manufacturing in late 1979. He worked in a number of management positions for Grove including head of marketing services. In 1986 Scarborough left Grove where he worked as a district manager and later as vice president of sales and marketing.

In 1992, Scarborough joined UpRight Inc. in Selma, Calif., as vice president of sales, marketing and customer service in North America, and later adding Asia to his area of responsibility, working with Upright until 2001.

Scarborough was instrumental in putting together a group of local investors to resurrect Snorkel in St. Joseph, Mo., in 2003, after the company had been closed by Textron/Omniquip. As chief operating officer, Scarborough was widely credited as being the driving force in rebuilding Snorkel, which was later acquired by the U.K.-based Tanfield Group in 2007 for $125 million. Scarborough left the company about a year later in mid-2008.

After leaving Snorkel, Scarborough worked for American Crane and Tractor Parts in Kansas City.

Scarborough is survived by his wife of 43 years Bonnie, daughters Leslie and Marielle, and granddaughter Sofia.
