New Utility Locator from General Pipe Cleaners

General Pipe Cleaners recently introduced the Gen-Eye Hot Spot utility locator featuring on-screen icons that make utility locating much easier. “The previous model was good for professionals, but it had a long learning curve,” Marty Silverman, vice president of marketing, explains. The new auto backlit LCD screen is much easier to use, he says.

While the old model utilized charts and graphs to help locate, the Gen-Eye Hot Spot has arrows that point the user directly to the target, Silverman says. This means that almost anyone can pick up the device and put it to use without having to figure out how the tool works.

The device includes a null point icon where all four arrows point back toward each other to indicate the null point and the pipe location. It also has a line direction compass that indicates where to lay the pipe and a camera icon that lets users know when they are directly above the camera and indicates depth.

The rugged locator was rated IP65. It is dust- and dirt-proof and water resistant and passed the one meter drop test. The screen passed the 18-inch steel ball drop test. Weighing slightly less than five pounds, it detects camera/sound frequencies at 512Hz and 33KHz; line utility frequencies at 1KHz, 8KHz, 33KHz, and 65KHZ; active power line frequencies at 60/50Hz and 180/150Hz; and has a depth range of 10 feet in cast-iron pipe and 20 feet in clay or plastic pipe.

Vital Stats

  • Weight: Less than five pounds
  • Depth range: 10 feet in cast-iron pipe; 20 feet in clay or plastic pipe

Kohler Gets Mobile with Propane-Fueled Generator

Kohler Power Systems launched a new line of propane-fueled mobile generators this month. The line was developed in cooperation with the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC), which is an energy council established, operated, and funded by the propane industry.

PERC drives technology development to expand adoption of propane as a clean, domestic, and affordable energy source. The result of this joint effort with Kohler is a line of propane-fueled generators that produce fewer emissions and less smog than other generators, PERC says.

The propane-fueled equipment not only offers a viable product, but it will also help construction professionals better comply with environmental standards that are becoming increasingly stringent, Kohler says. In addition, they also provide for improved air quality on job sites.

The new line features the model 125REZGT mobile generator, which has an on-board propane tank that can operate on its own fuel for 24 hours. It also has an external LP gas connection that allows it to be connected to an on-site propane tank.

In addition to producing fewer emissions, the propane-fueled generators also reduce the contamination that can be caused by fuel spills. Gas spills into the soil can impair drinking water, but propane-powered generators do not carry the same risk. The generators use a non-toxic propane that vaporizes at atmospheric pressure nearly eliminating all risk of spillage.

Vital Stats

  • Running time: 24 hours
  • Options available: on-board LP Tank
  • Incentives: $1,000-$8,5000
