Product of the Week - Volvo EC350E crawler excavator

Oct. 14, 2014
The EC350E crawler excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment features a powerful Tier 4 Final/Stage IV engine, combining efficiency, productivity and ease of transportation in general earthmoving applications.

The new Volvo EC350E crawler excavator is powered by a Tier 4 Final/Stage IV-compliant Volvo D13 engine, delivering powerful digging and breakout forces alongside reduced emissions and a significant improvement in fuel efficiency, according to the manufacturer.

The EC350E hydraulics were spec'd to match to the engine and are controlled by an advanced system which provides on-demand flow and reduces power losses within the circuit. Together with the new Volvo D13 engine and the unique Volvo ECO mode, the new EC350E provides superior productivity, extremely smooth and controllable hydraulics, with an overall improvement of up to 9 percent in fuel efficiency.

An integrated work mode system offers the operator a choice of four work modes according to the task at hand — I (Idle), F (Fine), G (General) or H (Heavy) — for optimum efficiency and machine performance. When the controls have been inactive for a pre-set amount of time, the excavator can be programmed to automatically reduce engine speed or even shut down to further reduce fuel consumption and noise. Operators can keep track of both current and average fuel consumption via a simple gauge in the cab.

User-friendly HMI

The EC350E has been designed for ease and simplicity of operation. All human machine interfaces — including joysticks, keypad and LCD monitor — are ergonomically designed and positioned for optimum comfort and control, says Volvo. The number of switches has been significantly reduced in comparison to previous models. An 8-inch color LCD screen displaying vital machine status information is designed to be easy to read in any light. To ensure operator safety, a seatbelt warning alarm sounds if the operator seatbelt is not fastened when the ignition key is engaged. Handrails and full-size guide-rails facilitate safe entry and exit of the cab, while easy-clean anti-slip plates help the operator gain a sure footing.

Maximum uptime

The EC350E crawler excavator has been designed not only for ease of operation, but also for simple maintenance – maximizing uptime and minimizing costs for parts and servicing. The machine’s undercarriage and high tensile steel X-shaped frame have been reinforced to ensure a long service life, while additional superstructure cover plates are designed to prevent damage to the underside of the machine from rocks and debris. The machine vitals are protected from overheating with a hydraulically-driven, electrically-controlled cooling fan that activates only when needed, further minimizing fuel consumption and noise, according to the manufacturer. The fan’s optional reverse functionality blows air in the opposite direction, providing self-cleaning for ease of maintenance. Daily service checks are facilitated with grouped service points and large wide-opening doors.

The EC350E can be modified through a wide range of attachments, including hydraulic breakers as well as a waste handling option. Bucket options include general purpose, heavy-duty, rock, extreme service and ditch cleaning buckets. All buckets are available in one of three attachment interfaces — Volvo dedicated S coupler interface, Volvo universal pin grabber interface or a simple pin-on interface. These attachments have been purpose-built to work in harmony with Volvo excavators. A selection of economic, replaceable wear parts including high-quality teeth, segments, side cutters, adapters and shrouds are also available.
