RER Spotlights: Compaction Equipment

Oct. 1, 2012
RER magazine spotlights compaction equipment products from Bomag, Bobcat, MBW, Multiquip, Terex Construction Americas and more.

Bomag

Designed with the compact size and maneuverability of a single-direction plate compactor, Bomag's BPR25/40 series reversible plate compactors offer higher centrifugal forces and convenient maintenance features. Suitable for work on granular material and mixed soils, the BPR25/40 series includes two models: The BPR25/40 features a 4.8-hp Honda air-cooled gasoline engine, while the BPR25/40D offers a 4.2-hp Hatz air-cooled diesel engine. Each unit produces 5,620 pounds of centrifugal force with a maximum frequency of 5,100 vpm. With a working width of 15.7 inches, each model works in confined areas that larger reversible plates cannot reach. The BPR25/40 series is designed for landscaping, site prep, patios and sidewalks, and other mid-size applications.

Bobcat

Two updated plate compactor attachments were introduced to expand the versatility of Bobcat M-Series compact excavators, making safer and more efficient work of restoring trenches. The new PCF34 and PCF64 flat-top plate compactor attachments offer enhanced compatibility with Bobcat M-Series excavators. Mounted at the end of an excavator arm, the plate compactor attachment is designed to provide more powerful compaction force than a hand-operated compactor and reduces the need for a worker in the trench. The PCF34's length is 26 inches from the excavator arm and its plate width is 18.75 inches. Its dynamic force is 3,400 pounds and the compaction frequency is 2,100 vpm. The PCF64's length is 34 inches from the excavator arm and its plate width is 23.5 inches. Its dynamic force is 6,400 pounds and the compaction frequency is 2,000 vpm.

MBW

The GP12 is a lightweight, economical compactor that features a patent-pending suspension system that places shock mounts in a predominantly shear mode at the high amplitude front end of the plate and a predominantly compressive mode at the low amplitude trailing end of the plate. This system, the maker says, reduces hand arm vibration and also better isolates all upper mass components, including the engine, from vibrations produced by the machine's exciter. Producing .057 inch amplitude, the GP12 is well suited to 10-inch lifts of granular soils including sands, bank run, gravels and asphalt. The unit has an overall width of 13 inches.

Multiquip

The all-new COMPAS compaction analyzing system for the Mikasa MVH306 and MVH406-Series reversible plate compactors are designed to help contractors improve efficiency and maximize productivity, while avoiding costly over-compaction. A series of LED lights indicates the progress made with each machine pass. As soil density changes, lights illuminate and inform the operator to either make additional passes or stop because optimum soil conditions have been attained for the specific plate compactor. Mikasa reversible plates feature ergonomically designed handles to minimize the vibration transferred to the operator. Removable extension plates allow the plate to be adapted for various trench applications. COMPAS units are equipped with Yanmar or Subaru Diesel engines.

Terex Construction Americas

The Terex TV1200 Tandem Asphalt Roller features a 6-in-1 joystick that is positioned to allow the operator to easily select all operational functions. The unit's dynamic braking system can be engaged when the joystick is in neutral or when the unit is shut off. Plastic fuel, water and hydraulic tanks reduce condensation and are encased in steel for maximum protection. The TV1200 has an operating weight of 6,382 pounds, a centrifugal force of 6,776 pounds and a static linear load of 77.5 pounds per inch.

Weber MT

Weber MT introduces the SRV 650 vibratory tamper, which features a Subaru ER 12 engine specifically designed for rammer applications. The four-stroke engine offers a multi-stage air filtration system and low-exhaust emissions. Thirteen pounds lighter than its predecessor, the SRV 650 has 3,600 pounds of compaction force. Its compact design allows for easy transportation and maneuverability in tight quarters. Additionally, it comes equipped with handles that help reduce hand and arm vibrations.

Dynapac

Dynapac articulated compact tandem rollers are designed for asphalt compaction in tight spaces, such as streets and pavements in urban areas. The CC1100, CC1200 and CC1300 (pictured) asphalt compaction roller models are available in either a dual-steer vibratory drum configuration or in a combi version featuring one vibratory drum and four rubber rear tires. The machines are powered by water-cooled Kubota diesel engines, which are designed to run quietly and fuel efficiently. The CC1300 is suitable for compacting sub-bases and base courses and can follow a small paver.

Chicago Pneumatic

Chicago Pneumatic offers the MV90 and MV100 (pictured) high-speed asphalt plates, which are equipped with a large water tank and a stainless-steel sprinkler system designed for compacting asphalt quickly and without interruption. The machines are designed to be easy to turn and maneuver. Classified as light machines, the MV90 weighs 189 pounds, while the MV100 weighs 205 pounds.

Doosan Infracore Portable Power

Three new plate compactor models expand the versatility of Doosan excavators and are designed to make quick work of restoring trenches. Featuring a flat top mount design, the Doosan plate compactors can easily be mounted to different carriers. The flat-top design allows the “cap” to be added to the attachment based on the specific machine being used. Four outboard shock mounts distribute vibrations evenly while keeping the attachment level, improving compaction efficiency and extending component life. Standard flow controls prevent over-speeding, which can lead to poor compaction and reduce bearing life. Applications for the new compactor attachments include compacting trenches, footings and slab areas.

Wacker Neuson

The DPU 100-70Les reversible vibratory plate compactor is engineered to provide extremely high compaction depth and surface performance, the maker says. The infinitely variable speed provides new ease of control and greater efficiency. The DPU 100-70Les provides 22,000 pounds of centrifugal force and a 34.4-inch wide operating width. Designed for large area compaction, the unit can also move slowly along jobsite obstacles, curbs and walls, right up to the edges allowing for added versatility. Also increasing efficiency is the ability to put the machine into creep speed, which enables the plate to travel across hard surfaces without damage to other locations around the site.
