Atlanta-Area College Introduces Heavy Equipment Technician Program
Gwinnett Technical College in Lawrenceville, Ga., one of the state’s largest technical colleges, will soon offer a certificate program to prepare students to work as heavy equipment technicians.
The college’s automotive division director said the certificate will be offered no later than this fall. Students will learn about hydraulics, engines, drive lines and electrical systems, and how to diagnose and repair problems on heavy diesel machines.
As part of the curriculum, students will participate in a five-week, paid internship during the last of their three quarters in the program. Internships will take place with Hertz Equipment Rental Corp.; John D. Stephens Inc.; Tractor & Equipment Co.; Briggs Equipment; Ingersoll Rand and Heavyquip.
Gwinnett has added the heavy equipment service technician program to the college’s automotive service technology division. The program is being introduced in response to industry demands. Gwinnett officials said heavy equipment service is one of the fastest growing and high-need areas in Georgia as identified by the Department of Labor.
The program was designed to be completed in three quarters and for students to enter the field upon completion as heavy equipment service technicians working with diesel equipment, truck or equipment rental and repair facilities.
Interested companies can learn more about the program at www.GwinnettTech.edu.
