GE Energy Rentals Powers Olympics

GE Energy Rentals played a major supporting role in the first week of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, generating more than 140 megawatts of electricity in the first week of competition. GE Energy is supplying prime and backup power to 45 Olympic sites, enough to power 14,000 homes. This includes all competition venues, the International Broadcast Center, the Main Press Center, the Olympic Village – which is housing at least 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries – and seven media villages.

GE Energy’s rental equipment deployment includes 375 diesel generators ranging in size from 25 to 1,850 kVA (kilowatts), 24 transformers ISO-rated at 300 kVA, 1,100 distribution panels, and more than 290 kilometers (180 miles) of electrical cables and associated distribution and protection systems. The International Broadcast Center is running on a 100 percent uninterrupted power system.

More than 150 GE Energy and locally contracted technicians from Athens-based Metal Constructions of Greece are on hand for the Games, as well as more than 50 business management and project support staff.

Atlanta-based GE Energy Rentals is No. 16 on the RER 100.
