Finning Workers Strike Over Job Security
About 900 heavy-duty mechanics, technicians, and parts people walked off the job and picketed the main offices of Caterpillar dealer Finning, in Edmonton, Alberta, last week, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The employees are seeking improved job security after about 200 employees had their jobs contracted out last year. Finning contends that most of the affected employees were redeployed and that it needs flexibility to remain competitive.
Bob MacKinnon, president of the union local, said the strike will affect Finning’s business in the burgeoning oil sands industry. Finning said it has contingency plans in place and will continue to provide sales and rental services.
Edmonton-based Finning is No. 16 on the RER 100.
